Accessible garden transformation

THE BRIEFMake the whole garden easier to enjoy

The client had a strong brief: a large terrace, a pond and stream, and easy accessibility throughout the garden in case mobility became more limited.

The layout needed to make different parts of the garden easy to reach while still feeling like a natural, varied landscape.

PROJECT AT A GLANCEAccessibility built into the whole layout

Rather than adding an accessible route afterwards, movement through the garden was treated as a core part of the design.
Large terrace

Connected paths
easy access around the garden
Pond & stream
naturalistic water feature
Low maintenance
perennials, shrubs and trees

THE SOLUTIONA connected route through terrace, planting and water

A large terrace leads into a path that provides easy access throughout the garden and links a series of useful viewpoints.

Decorative Indian sandstone retaining walls, shot-blasted Indian sandstone paving and an oak pergola provide the hard landscape framework.

The pond and stream were dressed with York stone boulders and Scottish river pebbles for a natural finish, with low-maintenance planting using perennials, shrubs and trees.

KEY FEATURESMaterials and features

The project combines accessible hard landscaping with natural materials, water and restrained planting.

Accessible path network
Routes connect the terrace to different viewpoints and garden areas.
Shot-blasted sandstone
Used for paving through the garden.
Sandstone retaining wall
Decorative walling helps organise the levels.
Oak pergola
A strong natural structure within the scheme.
York stone boulders
Used with Scottish river pebble to naturalise the pond and stream.
Low-maintenance planting
Perennials, shrubs and trees selected to soften the landscape without creating excessive upkeep.

THE CHALLENGECombining accessibility with a natural-looking garden

The practical circulation requirements could easily have made the garden feel dominated by paths.

The challenge was to make movement easy while using planting, natural stone and water to keep the garden visually rich and relaxed.

THE RESULTA garden that remains enjoyable even if mobility changes

The finished garden offers a generous terrace and a clear route to different areas and viewpoints.

Naturalistic water, planting and timber soften the accessible layout so the practical requirements feel integrated rather than imposed.
