A compact garden where a simple brief for raised planting beds developed into a more considered scheme using Purbeck stone and a small water feature.
THE BRIEFRaised planting beds along both sides of the garden
The original brief was straightforward: create raised planting beds along each side of the garden.
Because the space was relatively small and sat close to a red-brick house, the material choice needed careful thought.

PROJECT AT A GLANCEA small project where material choice made a big difference

THE SOLUTIONPurbeck stone planters instead of more red brick
The idea was developed into Purbeck stone planters, introducing a different natural material so the garden did not become too dominated by brick.
A small water feature was also added to bring another layer of interest to the compact space.
KEY FEATURESSimple elements, carefully selected
The strength of the garden comes from restraint rather than a large number of features.
THE CHALLENGEAvoiding too much brick in a small space
Using red brick for the new planters would have repeated the house material very heavily within a compact garden.
Purbeck stone allowed the new work to sit comfortably beside the property while giving the garden more texture and contrast.

THE RESULTA more layered garden without overcrowding it
The raised beds give the garden stronger structure and more useful planting space.
The natural stone and small water feature add enough variety to make the garden feel considered while keeping the overall scheme simple.
